Tungsten and Rhenium – Comparison – Properties

Rhenium. More than 80% of the global rhenium usage is in high-temperature superalloys for aircraft applications like turbine blades and engine parts. These alloys contain up to 6% rhenium, making jet engine construction the largest single use for the element. Rhenium is added to nickel-based super alloys to improve creep strength of the alloys.

Understanding the thermal conductivity of pristine W and W–Re alloys

In this paper, a physics-based thermal conductivity model is developed to predict the effects of dislocation and grain size on the heat transfer process of pristine tungsten under a wide temperature range of 300–1200 K. W–Re alloys added with 1–25 wt% rhenium are studied to examine and analyze the variation of thermal conductivity.

Thermal diffusivity of irradiated tungsten and tungsten-rhenium alloys

Fukuda et al., reported tungsten-rhenium alloy showed a systematic change with rhenium concentration, but on the other hand, K-doped W showed almost same thermal diffusivity [4]. In their paper, W-1% Re alloy showed 47.6 mm 2 /s at 401 °C, and this thermal diffusivity is very close to that of the irradiated pure tungsten in this study.

Rhenium Alloys

The tungsten-rhenium alloys are, of course, the most well-known tungsten alloy system enhancing ductility [23, 40, 41]. Most reported research on tungsten-rhenium alloys shows the combined effects of rhenium alloying and thermomechanical processing [40, 41, 48, 50]. The effect of thermomechanical processing will be examined in more detail in ...

High temperature fracture experiments on tungsten–rhenium alloys

Tungsten–rhenium alloys outclasses other tungsten-based materials in terms of increased ductility. We study the reason for this positive effect by investigating the influence of rhenium on the fracture process of tungsten–rhenium alloys at different temperatures (between room temperature and 900 °C). The experiments are performed …
