Cadmium Plating Q&A Problems & Solutions

Q. We have encountered a problem with our cyanide cadmium plating. After 20 mins of plating with 25-35 °C temperature and 2-5 Amps, still the plating is missing on several parts of the job. Plating happens well on small and smooth surface parts but not on un-smooth surfaces and large parts.

Preventing Metal Hydrogen Embrittlement: Causes & Solutions

The cadmium plating layer is particularly resistant to hydrogen diffusion, as hydrogen generated during cadmium plating remains in the plating layer and the metal surface layer underneath, making it difficult to diffuse outward and remove.. Over time, hydrogen diffuses into the metal and can enter defects within the metal, making it difficult …

Application of the Process at Boeing-St. Louis IVD Aluminum …

finish on over 350 previously cadmium-plated steel parts. The IVD aluminum-coating process was qualified for use on copper-based, stainless steel, and titanium-based alloys. The cadmium plating line was closed at the SM-ALC. Again, the substitution of IVD aluminum coating for cadmium benefited SM-ALC similarly to that at the WR-ALC.

Cadmium Plating

Aircraft Hardware

Cadmium plated cotter pins are AN380 and stainless are AN381. Cotter pins are used for safetying bolts, screws, nuts and other pins. You will normally use them with castle nuts. The MS number you may see is MS24665. The dash numbers indicate diameter and length of the pin. As an example, AN380-2-2 would be a cadmium plated pin 1/16" …

Alternatives to Cadmium in Aerospace |

SIFCO has been working closely with Sikorsky Aircraft to use zinc-nickel plating on its heavy lift helicopter, and with OEM parts on localized areas. The results have found that zinc-nickel could become a reliable and compliant alternative to cadmium in the aerospace sector.

Cadmium Plating | Cad Plating | AMS-QQ-P-416 | Techmetals, Inc.

Cadmium plating is an attractive, soft coating that can be deposited on various base materials, up to and including steels, copper and different types of iron. Moreover, it is one of the few deposits that is sacial, excelling in corrosion protection. With natural lubricity, Cad plating also provides anti-galling and low friction properties.

Metal plating

Published on: May 6, 2022. Metal plating is the process of applying a thin layer of metal coating on the metal surface, substrate, component, part, or product. The plating process achieves numerous benefits by combining the advantages of two different materials. For example, steel has positive mechanical characteristics like high strength, and ...

Technical Fact Sheet for Cadmium

Cadmium is released into the environment through mining and metal processing operations, burning fuels, making and using phosphate fertilizers, and disposing of metal products. One of the reasons that cadmium has been listed as a PBT is that inhaling cadmium fumes at high exposures can cause heart and lung irritation, including shortness of ...

Cadmium Plating | Surface Treatment | South West Metal Finishing

Cadmium Plating. Cadmium is robust and versatile. Cadmium has a silvery white metallic appearance with excellent corrosion resistance, which functions as a "sacial coating," corroding before the substrate material. To enhance the corrosion protection of cadmium plating, chromate conversion coatings can be applied over the plated metal.

Cadmium Plating and the Alternatives

To date, SIFCO ASC has two cadmium plating alternatives which provide corrosion resistance, lubricity, and low hydrogen embrittlement. Zinc-Nickel LHE, Code 4018 and Tin-Zinc, Code 4019 both meet aerospace spec AMS 2451, while 4018 also meets AMS 2417, and 4019 meets AMS 2434. These superior quality deposits can be applied anywhere, in …

Understanding Fastener Platings and Finishes

Zinc & cadmium plated parts: Very good: A secondary dipping process after plating increasing corrosion resistance, adding color or brilliance. Black Oxide: Black: Ferrous metals and stainless steel: Fair: A chemical discoloration which does not add to part thickness. Usually combined with an oil dip. Rust resistance comes from the oil only ...

Why cadmium plated bolts rather than stainless steel?

The sheer strengh of steel is 186,000 pounds per square inch.. The sheer strengh of stainless is 137, 000 pounds per square inch. Since steel's single-shear strength is typically 70% of tensile, it would take some super steel to get 186KSI. AN bolts have a tensile of around 120ksi and would have a shear strength of 84ksi.

Aerospace Plating Services

Ti-Cad Plating. Ti-Cad or titanium cadmium plating is a titanium cadmium combination plating that provides corrosion resistance on high-strength steel applications. It significantly reduces the negative consequences of …

When to use Cadmium Plated vs. Galvanized Bolts and Fasteners?

The fasteners are 1/4"-20 x 1-1/4" Flat Head Mach Screws. The boxes are threaded and the holes for the FHMS are countersunk. The galvanic action in the environment is very strong, and the fasteners actually corrode in a short span of time. You cannot readily find 1/4"-20 anything hot dipped galv, much less a FHMS.

What's So Special About Cadmium Plating?

Here's why NASA doesn't like Cadmium plating: 1. Cadmium is known to sublimate in a hard vacuum environment (especially at temperatures above 75° C). The sublimation products, which are conductive, can redeposit resulting in short circuits. The sublimation products may also interfere with sensitive optics. 2.
