Abstract. Clay is defined as a natural, earthy, fine-grained material, largely of a group of crystalline hydrous silicate minerals known as clay minerals. The usual types of mines are open pit but underground mining is also done for clay, associated with coal deposits and more profitable, particularly for fire clays.
