Stronger. You're both right, the lower angle helix on the gears causes the whine. The gears aren't stronger, the overall tranny is. The more surface area the gears mesh on, the stronger they are. A high helix gear is stronger, BUT straighter cut gears put less thrust load on the trans case, so the tranny doesn't undergo as much flex.
