For 30 or so years, beginning in the early-1970s this road was used by open-topped haulage trucks to transport salt to the ship-loading jetty on Mistaken Island. In 2003, the truck haulage along this stretch of road was replaced by an automated conveyor-belt system that continues to be used today.
